Walk-In Showers in Sun City, AZ
Low-threshold and curbless walk-in showers for Sun City homes — built with grab-bar blocking, proper slope, and a bench where it earns its space.
Quick answer: Infinity Kitchens and Baths builds walk-in showers throughout Sun City, AZ. Most replace an original tub-shower combination inside the same footprint. We set blocking in the walls for grab bars whether or not you want them mounted today, slope the pan correctly, and finish with a handheld on a slide bar plus a fixed head.

Why Sun City bathrooms fight a walk-in shower
The bathrooms in these homes were drawn for a buyer in their fifties who had just retired, in a decade when nobody designed for the decades after. The result is a very consistent room: a tub-shower combination as the only bathing option, a vanity at a height chosen before comfort height existed, a door cut narrow because the hallway was tight, and not one stud bay with blocking in it.
That consistency is genuinely useful to us. We have taken enough of these apart to know what is behind the tile before we open it, which means the estimate you get is closer to the invoice you get. It also means the job has a known shape: the tub comes out, the alcove gets reframed with blocking, the pan gets set with real slope, and the entry drops to something you step over rather than climb.
The step is the whole point. A standard tub wall is around fifteen inches. Getting a leg over that while wet, on a surface with nothing to hold, is the single most dangerous thing most residents do each day. Replacing it with a half-inch threshold and a bar you can grab is not a luxury remodel — it is the difference between a bathroom you can use alone and one you cannot.
Curbless, and when it is worth the extra work
A low-threshold pan solves most of the problem for most people. A fully curbless entry — where the shower floor and the bathroom floor meet dead flush — solves all of it, and is the right answer if a walker or a wheelchair has to roll in rather than step in.
It costs more because the floor has to give way. In a slab-on-grade house, which is nearly all of them here, that means either recessing the pan into the slab or building the rest of the bathroom floor up to meet it. Neither is exotic, both take time, and any contractor who quotes curbless at the same price as low-threshold has not thought about your slab.
Our advice is unsentimental: if nobody in the household uses a wheeled aid today and the house has a second bathroom, low-threshold is usually the better value. If a wheelchair is already in the picture, or a progressive diagnosis makes it likely, do it once and do it curbless.
Glass, doors, and the trade nobody mentions
A doorless walk-in — the kind with a fixed glass panel and an open entry — is easier to get into, easier to clean, and has nothing to pull open with wet hands. It is almost always what we recommend in these homes. The trade is that it needs a longer shower to keep water off the bathroom floor, because there is no door holding the spray in.
In a standard five-foot alcove that usually works with the head aimed away from the opening and a slight extra fall on the pan. In a shorter run it may not, and the honest answer is a low-profile door rather than a wet floor every morning.
If a door is needed, we specify a swing panel over a slider. Sliding doors run on a bottom track that traps grime, needs scrubbing, and becomes one more thing to manage. Frameless swing panels cost a little more and stay usable for far longer.
Permits for this work in Sun City
This is the detail most contractors get wrong. Sun City is not a city — it is an unincorporated community, so there is no municipal building department. Residential permits are issued by Maricopa County Planning & Development through the county Permit Center, reachable on 602-506-3301. Separately, the Sun City Fire and Medical District issues permits and inspects for fire and life safety within the district.
Accessibility work touches plumbing and often framing, so it is squarely the kind of job that gets reviewed. Moving a drain, recessing a floor for a curbless entry, or widening a doorway all change things an inspector cares about. We pull the permit and meet the inspector ourselves.
Sun City opened on 1 January 1960 as Del Webb's first large-scale active adult community, and property here carries membership in Recreation Centers of Sun City. Check RCSC's current requirements and your own deed restrictions before work begins — anything affecting the exterior is the usual trigger, and an interior kitchen or bathroom remodel normally is not, but confirming costs nothing and assuming can cost weeks. See Recreation Centers of Sun City (RCSC).

The Sun City homes this work happens in
Sun City's homes were built between 1960 and the late 1970s, which makes the oldest of them well over sixty years old.
That single fact drives everything we do here. Original bathrooms in Sun City were built to 1960s expectations: a tub-shower combination as the only bathing option, a 30-inch vanity at a height that suited a thirty-year-old, doorways cut narrow, and no blocking in the walls for anything to be mounted to later. Kitchens carry the same signature — shallow wall cabinets, deep unlit base cabinets you have to kneel to reach into, and a single ceiling fixture. None of that is a defect. It is simply a house designed for a different stage of life than the one its owner is now in, which is why so much of our Sun City work is accessibility work wearing a remodel's clothes.
Scheduling walk-in shower work in Sun City
Sun City is a northern run for us, scheduled alongside Sun City West and Surprise. The free consultation comes to you — we measure in your home and quote from those measurements, not from a phone call.
We group work by area so crews are on site in continuous stretches rather than appearing for a morning and disappearing. Materials are ordered and staged before demolition, which keeps the disruptive part of an accessible-bathroom project as short as it can be — and that matters more than usual when the person living with the work is the person who needs the bathroom.
Call 602-885-6998, or read our aging-in-place guide first if you are still deciding what the house needs.
Walk-In Showers in Sun City — Common Questions
How long does a walk-in shower installation take in Sun City?
Most single-bathroom conversions run one to two weeks of on-site work once materials are staged, with the demolition and rough-in at the front and tile and glass at the end. If the drain has to move or the floor has to be recessed for a curbless entry, plan for longer. We give you a written schedule before anything is torn out.
Do I have to give up my bathtub?
Not necessarily, and it is worth thinking about rather than defaulting. If it is the only tub in the house, removing it can matter to some buyers later. If there is another tub elsewhere, or nobody in the household bathes in one, the space is almost always better spent on a larger shower. We will tell you which situation you are in and let you decide.
Can grab bars be added later?
Only properly if the wall was built for them. We install blocking behind the tile as standard on these projects, at the heights the 2010 ADA Standards specify for grab bars (33-36 inches above the finished floor, §609.4), so a bar can be mounted into solid material years later. Retrofitting into a tiled wall with no blocking is possible but never as good.
Do a lot of homes in Sun City have this done?
Yes — it is the most common remodel in these communities, because the original bathrooms were built for a stage of life most residents have moved past. That familiarity works in your favour: we know what is behind the walls in this housing stock before we open them, which makes the estimate more reliable than it would be in a mixed neighbourhood.
Can the work be scheduled around a medical recovery?
Often, and it is worth telling us if that is the driver. A conversion done before a hip or knee replacement is far easier than one done during recovery, and the schedule can usually be pulled forward if we know why. If the timing is already tight, say so at the consultation rather than after.
