Should I avoid marble in a kitchen?

Marble etches from anything acidic — lemon, wine, vinegar, some cleaners — and that etching is a physical change to the stone, not a stain you can scrub out. It needs sealing several times a year. Can I replace only the countertops and keep my cabinets?

If your cabinets are solid but dated, look at refinishing or refacing alongside new tops — together they read as a full remodel at a fraction of the cost.
